ASTM A270 is a specification specifically designed for sanitary applications, applicable to seamless and welded austenitic stainless steel tube. Unlike industrial piping standards such as ASTM A312, it emphasizes cleanliness, corrosion resistance, and ease of cleaning. It is specifically designed for cleanliness-critical industries such as food, pharmaceutical, and dairy. TP304 is a classic 18-8 austenitic stainless steel (chromium 18-20%, nickel 8-10.5%) that is molybdenum-free. Its low carbon content (≤ 0.08%) provides good corrosion resistance and formability.
ASTM A270 TP304 Sanitary Stainless Steel Seamless Tube Manufacturing Process
Molding process:
- Seamless pipe: mainly made through hot rolling or cold drawing processes, ensuring smooth inner walls.
- Welded pipes: TIG welding or laser welding are mainly used, and solution treatment (1050-1150 ° C rapid cooling) is required after welding to eliminate welding stress.
Surface treatment:
- Acid pickling passivation: Remove the oxide layer and form a passivation film.
- Electrolytic polishing (EP): improves surface smoothness (Ra ≤ 0.5 μ m), reduces microbial adhesion, and meets hygiene requirements.

ASTM A270 sanitary stainless steel seamless tubes have strong corrosion resistance and can maintain good stability in general oxidizing acids (such as nitric acid), organic acids, and alkaline media. However, their resistance to pitting corrosion in chloride environments is weaker than TP316 (because they do not contain molybdenum), and long-term contact with chlorine containing media should be avoided.
